What does it mean to be great? For over 40 years the Boys and Girls Clubs of Black Hawk County, in partnership with the rest of the community, have played a crucial role in helping Black Hawk County youth to discover, redefine, and embody what it means to be truly great each day. We strive to promote a positive, safe, and enriching environment for children and teens to gather after school. Each day we provide intellectually engaging programming that encourages our members to think critically, act responsibly, and reach their full potential. Our small, but dedicated staff works daily to build positive and trusting relationships with all of our youth in an effort to foster self-esteem, mutual respect, and individual expression. Between our three Club sites (Waterloo, Cedar Falls, and Evansdale) we serve approximately 150 youth each day and over 700 youth annually. And while we’d love to give each of our members the individualized attention they deserve, we simply do not have the capacity to do so. Because our organization operates on very limited resources, volunteers are absolutely vital to the life-affirming work we do here. In fact, I would go so far as to say that their commitment to our kids is instrumental to the positive youth development strategies that we employ at our Clubs each day. We love our volunteers! Having said that, we are always looking to increase the ranks of our volunteer corps and get more people engaged with our mission. Consider joining our family! A few ways volunteers have contributed in the past include (but are not limited to):

-          Helping with homework during our Power Hour

-          Tutoring

-          Mentoring

-          Arts and craft projects

-          Playing board games

-          Music

-          Sports

-          Assisting with clerical work

-          Special events

Spending an hour or two a week with our kids really can (and DOES) make a difference. Our Club mission is to inspire and enable all young people, especially those who need us the most, to reach their full potential as productive, responsible, and caring citizens. Help us continue to do so, and in the process learn what it means to be great through doing good in our community. If you want to inspire a child to be great, please direct volunteer inquires to:
