My name is David Pope and I am running for NISG for the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences.  I'm a sophomore Political Communications major and I am currently on the executive board of UNI Proud, the UNI Feminist Action League, and a member of UNI Transgenda and a local Occupier in the Occupy Cedar Valley group.  I believe that there needs to be a shake-up of NISG to get things rolling in a more progressive direction.  If elected, I will:
  • Push to establish an LGBT center on campus to ensure that everyone has equal access to resources, institutional support, and a safe space to gather.  An LGBT center on campus would help lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender students deal with the unique issues they face such as harassment, housing problems, issues with bathroom use, coming out, etc.
  • Support the establishment of a "dead week" that would allow students one week class-free before taking their finals.
  • Extend and expand diversity and cultural competency training programs for UNI faculty and staff, as well as for NISG senators.
  • Free up more resources for student organizations and streamline the applications for NISG funds to make them more accessible.
  • Look into the possibility of offering some gender neutral housing and bathroom options.
  • Fight tuition increases which make it increasingly difficult to pay for college.
