Are you  wondering what you can do with your degree in psychology?

UNI Psychology Club presents
Dr. Brendan O'Brien
Gone Walkabout: How I made it from UNI Psych to building a Bionic Eye.

Dr. O'Brien states:

"When I graduated from high school in Cedar Rapids, I was going to be a high school band director. I even won a scholarship to study music at UNI, playing my trusty Buffet clarinet. It was the GenEd through that turned me on to a major in Psychology. I was fascinated with behavior and how Phineas Gage could possibly have survived an iron bar shooting through his skull. I wanted to know more about the brain and how it worked. After taking Biopsychology, I pestered and pestered and pestered Dr. Walsh to show me how to make a rat hyperphagic with a brain lesion. Later on, her kind attention served me well when I interviewed for Grad school in Seattle and was asked exactly that question! Ever since then, I have been hooked on understanding the brain, how it works and more recently how we can go about fixing it. These day, I would describe myself primarily as a neuroscientist. I run my own laboratory at the University of Melbourne in Australia, where my research as taken me (with several notable stops along the way) from starting out tracing brain pathways in grad school  to understanding how our eyes work, and these days, how we can restore vision to the blind. So come along, hear some stories about your professors, what grad school is like and what you can expect, an I'll even show some pics of kangaroos and koalas too!"

What is Psychology Club?

If you are considering psychology (or any other social science), the Psychology Club is for you!

Besides taking the courses to get your degree, what else do you need to do to have a satisfying and successful career in psychology?  LOTS!  Much of what you need to know will seldom be mentioned in classes.  Part of the mission of Psychology Club is informing students about needed career skills and opportunities, building a resume, and getting that first job.

One important activity is participating as a volunteer in community agencies that hire psychologists.  Psychology Club can help you find the right experience matching your career plans.

Did you know that about half of psychology students  go on for graduate training?  Many careers in psychology require an advanced degree, but getting into graduate school is competitive.  Psychology Club can help you increase your chances of getting into the graduate program of your choice and interest!
